Areas of origin: Northern Iran, China, Japan; south-east of the United States and in tropical Africa. Introduced into Europe in 1745.

Adult dimensions: Height up to 12 metres, width up to 12 metres (39.4').

Foliage: Deciduous.

Soil type: All.

Hardiness: Half-hardy needs summer warmth, tolerant to -10°C.

Exposure: Full sun.

Characteristics and Uses:
The Silk tree has an abundant blossom throughout the entire summer in hot areas. This magnificent ornamental tree is best planted on its own. Numerous varieties exist. Planfor has selected the Silk Tree 'Ombrella' for its beautiful fragrant pink blossom and 'Summer chocolate' for its chocolate tinted foliage and its beautiful pink flowers.
