The Maritime Pine and the Landes: A long lasting story!
It's in the XIX century that the Maritime Pine was introduced massively in the Landes of Gascogne. At the time, the aim was to clean up the swamps and to hold the dunes back.
The Landes' forest has been created by men. It represents 20 % of the French forest range.
The Pine industry in Aquitaine generates 30 000 jobs. 1 200 000 hectares of Maritime Pines are cultivated in the Landes.
