Red Japanese Barberry - Berberis thunbergii 'atropurpurea' (latin)

Area of origin: Japan. Introduced into Europe in 1864.
Adult Dimensions: Height up to 1.5m, width up to 1.5m (4.9').
Foliage: Deciduous.
Soil Type: Avoid areas that are too wet.
Hardiness: Hardy to -30°C.
Exposure: Full sun.


Properties and uses:
The purple foliage and the red tinted yellow flowers in April and May make this shrub very interesting in the garden.  It can be planted alone but is also frequently used as a protective hedge.  This beautiful shrub conceals numerous single spines.
