Antarctic Beech - Nothofagus antarctica (latin)

Geographical origin: Patagonia.
Adult Dimensions: Height up to 25m in its natural habitat.
Foliage: Deciduous.
Type of soil: Moist, rich and well drained. Dislikes Limy and heavy soils.
Climate: Hardy up to -15°C.
Site: Full sun.


Characteristics and uses:
The Antarctic Beech (or false Beech) comes from the Andes and Tierra del Fuego. Its spreading shape and its small leaves turning golden- orange in the autumn are quite unusual. In the spring, its buds exhale a delicate cinnamon scent in the air.
Shown at its best planted on its own, sheltered from wind. The Antarctic Beech is also an excellent subject for bonsai connoisseurs.
