The dark colour of the bark and the foliage are what gives this tree its name. Its right trunk and the numerous large branches make this tree very attractive in parks and gardens. It is planted alone or in groups. Bonsai enthusiasts often work on this tree. The wood is durable with lots of knots that make the branches important. It is nevertheless essential in forestry because of its hardiness, and tolerance to lime and dryness. The needles come in pairs.
