Area of origin: China, Japan and Korea.
Adult dimensions: Height: up to 2.5 meters, Spread: up to 2.5 meters.
Soil: Deep and cool, silty and rich in organic matter or peat or heather compost. Does not tolerate chalky soil.
Hardiness: Frost hardy up to -20°C.
Position: Semi-shade to full sun.
Characteristics and features:
Renowned for its impressive spread and the colour of its glossy leaves which change from red to light green in the summer and then back to red in the autumn.
Throughout the whole of its growing period, its leaves start off a vibrant red and then turn to green.
Can be planted singly, in a group, in flowerbeds, in gardens, on grounds and even on apartment balconies or north facing terraces.
Being well known in the Bonsai world, it produces interesting results when planted in a suitable container and pruned a few times throughout the year.
