Dwarf Pomegranate - Punica granatum nana (latin)

Geographic origins: Southeastern Europe, Western Asia.
Mature dimensions: Height up to 40 cm, width up to 40 cm.
Foliage: Deciduous.
Soil type: Neither too wet nor too dry. Intolerant of lime.
Climate: Protect during harsh winters. Hardy down to -13°C.
Exposure: Full sun.


Properties and uses:
The dwarf pomegranate (Punica granatum 'Nana') adds a Mediterranean touch to balconies, terraces, and small gardens. This ornamental shrub appeals with its naturally dense habit, low water requirements, and ability to define outdoor spaces. It offers a changing display throughout the seasons, combining vibrant summer blooms with charming, decorative fruit in autumn.

  • Prolific & prolonged flowering: From June to September, it is covered in a multitude of bright orange-red single flowers that attract pollinators.
  • Highly decorative fruit: In late summer, the flowers give way to small pomegranates the size of a walnut. These inedible fruits remain hanging from the branches for much of the autumn.
  • Compact and versatile size: With a mature height of 80 cm to 1.20 m, this compact shrub fits beautifully into patio planters or rock gardens, or serves to create an elegant, low ornamental hedge.
  • High drought tolerance: Once well-established, it withstands water shortages and intense summer heat exceptionally well.
  • Bonsai cultivation: Its small, glossy green deciduous foliage and bark that peels with age make it a highly prized subject for bonsai enthusiasts.

Several varieties exist:
- 'Chico' dwarf pomegranate: distinguished by its ultra-compact habit—reaching no more than 60 cm to 1 m—and spectacular, bright orange double flowers; however, it is entirely sterile, meaning it produces no fruit.
