Everything about: Hop Bush, purple

Purple Hop Bush, Purple Hopseed Bush - Dodonea Viscosa 'Purpurea' (latin)

Geographical origin: New Zealand
Adult sizes: 3 to 4m
Foliage: Evergreen
Type of soil: Any, preferably moist and well drained.
Climate: Not very hardy, up to -5°C
Site: Full sun

Properties and uses:
The Purple Hop Bush is a shrub suited to seaside sites, which has an interesting green-bronze foliage in summer turning purple in autumn-winter.
This shrub is dioecious meaning the female plants produce odd looking pink capsules with wings at the end of the summer.
Its erect shape, its rapid growth and its ease of looking after make it a perfect choice for the creation of a hedge. Make sure however to grow the Purple Dodonea in planters to ease over-wintering in areas subjected to frost.
