Magnolia Vine - Schisandra rubriflora (latin)

Areas of origin: China
Adult dimensions: Vine, height up to 3 m
Foliage: Deciduous
Soil type: Moist and well-drained
Hardiness: Hardy to - 15°C
Exposure: semi-shade to full sun

Properties and uses:
The Magnolia Vine is a climber. Red flowers bloom in clusters, starting in May. The Magnolia Vine is hardy and frost-resistant; it should be trained on a wood or metal support, or on a wall to help the growth. This plant is dioecious which means that, in order to obtain fruit after the blossom, both male and female plants are needed in the garden. However, it is sometimes difficult for the amateur as well as for the professional to distinguish male from female plants. So, it is recommended to plant several specimens to obtain small red berries, both beautiful and edible. The berries of the Magnolia Vine can be used for making herbal tea or other sweet and spicy, tonic drinks.
