Description: Marram Grass, European Beachgrass

Marram Grass, European Beachgrass - Ammophila arenaria (latin)

Area of origin: Native to Europe and North Africa, it is widely present on the coastlines of the Atlantic, the English Chanel and the Mediterranean Sea. Introduced in many other regions of the world (North America, New Zealand, Australia) to stabilise sand dunes.
Adult dimensions: Height up to 100cm
Foliage: Evergreen
Soil type: Prefers light sandy soils, well-drained, poor and even limey. Salt tolerant.
Hardiness: Hardy to -15°C
Exposure: Full sun
Density: 4 /m²

Properties and uses:
Ammophila arenaria, also known as Marram Grass or European Beachgrass, is a hardy, perennial grass, with an extremely developed root system. It is easily recognizable with its clumps of erect stems.
It is mainly used to stabilise sand dunes and sandy soils along the coasts thanks to an exceptional root system. The Marram Grass can also be planted in gardens with a ‘beach’ or ‘natural’ style, in sunny, well-drained areas.
Be aware that it may be invasive: in small gardens, it is better to plant it in big pots with an open bottom and set up an anti-rhizome barrier.

Ecological feature: Ammophila arenaria has an important part in protecting the coasts from erosion. It holds the sand transported by the wind, thus forming and stabilising the dunes. It is a pioneer species, and can settle in extreme environments with wind, ocean spray and draught.
