Description: Japanese Camellia Red

Japanese Camellia Red - Camellia japonica rubra (latin)

Geographic origins: Hybrid, Japan, China, Korea.
Adult dimensions: Height up to 4 metres, width up to 2 metres.
Foliage: Evergreen, dark green.
Type of soil: Not chalky and well drained.
Hardiness: Hardy to -14°C.
Exposure: Partial shade or full sun, sheltered from cold winds.


Properties and uses:
The Red Japanese Camellia produces beautiful red, pompom-shaped flowers. The flowers bloom from January to April. To increase the number of flowers from year to year, make sure to water the Japanese Camellia from April to September.
Camellia Japonica is an upright shrub with dense, hardy, glossy green foliage. It thrives in the garden, alone or in a flowerbed with other plants for acid soil. It is also beautiful when grown in a pot or planter on a balcony or trellised against a wall. It may also be pruned when the blossoming is over.


There are several varieties:
- Red Japanese Camellia ‘Kramer’s Supreme’ : red, fragrant, pompom-shaped flowers.
