Properties and uses:
Cade Juniper, also called ‘cade’ or ‘small cedar’, is the quintessential hardy shrub. Native to the Mediterranean Basin, it is perfect for people who are looking for a tough, low-maintenance plant capable to withstand both heat and cold.

  • Undeniable hardiness: Originating from Mediterranean scrublands, the Cade Juniper tolerates intense droughts, strong winds and poor or rocky soils. It is also highly resistant to diseases.
  • A unique blue-grey foliage: Its fine needles, marked by two white bands (only one for the common juniper) and silvery reflections, catch the light throughout the year.
  • Fragrant and useful: Its wood is famous for its woody, camphor-like scent. Cade oil is extracted from it and has been used since Antiquity for its purifying properties.
  • A haven for biodiversity: Its berries (fleshy cones), which turn a rusty brown when ripe, provide a valuable winter food source for birds.
  • Minimal maintenance: Once established, it requires almost no care. It is the perfect ally for gardens with no irrigation.

The nurseryman’s tip: Cade Juniper hates having its ‘feet in water’. When planting the tree, don’t hesitate to add a layer of gravel at the bottom of the hole to ensure perfect drainage.
