Purple-leaved Japanese Maple 'Koto no ito' - Acer palmatum 'Koto no ito' (latin)

Geographical origin: Japan, China and Korea.
Adult sizes: Height up to 2.5 m, spread up to 2m.
Foliage: Deciduous.
Type of soil: Deep and moist, silty and rich in organic matter or in heath peat soil. So is therefore sensitive to calcareous soil (limy or chalky).
Climate: Hardy to -17°C. Is sensitive to spring's frost, cold winds and very dry atmosphere.
Site: Partial shade to full sun.


Properties and uses:
The Japanese maple 'Koto no ito' has finely indented foliage which changes each season. Pale green with brown tips in the spring, it becomes a darker green in summer before turning orangey-yellow in autumn. Despite the delicacy of its foliage, the Japanese Maple 'Koto no ito' tolerates sun.
This rounded-shape Japanese Maple is shown at its best grown on its own, or combined with heath peat loving plants like Azaleas ; Rhododendrons and stones and water for a Japanese garden in the traditional way ! The Japanese Maple 'Koto no ito' can also be grown in pot on a terrace or a balcony, or as a Bonsai.
