Everything about: Kaki lotus, Date-plum, Caucasian Persimmon

Kaki lotus, Date-plum, Caucasian Persimmon - Diospyros lotus (latin)

Geographic origin: China and Japan.
Adult size: Height up to 6 metres.
Foliage: Deciduous.
Type of soil: All, well drained.
Climate: Hardy to -15°C.
Position: Full sun, protected from winds.

Properties and uses:
The Caucasian Persimmon, also called Date-plum because its fruit has a taste reminiscent of both plums and dates, is a decorative fruit tree.
The small yellowish and melliferous flowers bloom in May-June. In autumn, the foliage turns orange red before falling. The small fruits are berries with a soft, juicy, and tasty yellow flesh. They are also rich in minerals and vitamin C. They are eaten almost overripe when the skin goes from orange to purplish brown.
Quite hardy and disease resistant, the Caucasian Persimmon is the perfect candidate to plant in orchards or for fruit hedges and agroforestry. The flowers and fruit feed pollinator insects and birds.
The female plant is the only one to bear fruit, so it is recommended to plant several trees to have a good yield.

Plant them now: the shortest way to your plate is through your garden!
