Description: Dianthus Red

Red Dianthus - Dianthus plumarius rubra (latin)

Geographic Origins: The Orient and Central Europe.
Adult size: Height up to 25 cm, width up to 25 cm.
Foliage: Evergreen.
Type of soil: Well drained, neutral and chalky.
Climate: hardy to -20°C.
Position: Full sun.
Planting density: 9/m².

Properties and uses:
The Red Dianthus (cottage pink) is a timeless perennial that perfectly embodies the spirit of cottage gardens and English-style flowerbeds, featuring fragrant blooms from May to July.

  • Radiant blooms: It becomes covered in a multitude of small, intensely carmine-red, finely sculpted double flowers.
  • Unique fragrance: It releases an intense, sweet, and spicy scent (with notes of clove) that instantly perfumes walkways and terraces.
  • Elegant in every season: Its evergreen foliage forms a compact, beautiful blue-green cushion that remains decorative and visually striking even in winter.
  • Exceptional hardiness: Highly hardy and drought-tolerant, it thrives in poor, stony, and very sunny soils.

Thanks to its compact habit and evergreen foliage, it is ideal for edging flowerbeds or pathways, but can also be used in rock gardens or as ground cover if planted densely.
Low-maintenance and undemanding, this pink is easy to care for.
Remove spent flowers to prolong the blooming period, and cut back the clump if it loses its compactness or begins to blacken at the base.
