Purple Leaved Plum Tree - Prunus cerasifera 'Pissardii' (latin)

Area of origin: Obtained in the nineteenth century in Iran.
Adult Dimensions: Height up to 7 m, spread up to 5 m.
Foliage: Deciduous, dark purple.
Soil Type: Any, well drained.
Hardiness: Hardy to - 25°C.
Exposure: Partial shade to full sun.


Properties and uses:
The Purple Leaved Plum Tree stands out with its superb glossy, dark purple foliage which contrasts with the green foliage of the surrounding trees. In the spring, it covers itself with abundant pink blossom followed by small, edible red plums which reach maturity in July. Not requiring a lot of maintenance, you can prune the Purple Leaved Plum Tree after blossom if you want to keep it to a certain shape.
The purple prunus is magnificent grown on its own, in a hedge or trained as a shrub.
