Everything about: Combava

Combava, Kaffir Lime - Citrus hystrix (latin)

Geographical origins: Indonesia.
Adult size: Height up to 3 m, spread up to 2 m.
Foliage: Evergreen.
Type of soil: free draining, neutral to acid.
Climate: Not Hardy, 4°C.
Site: Full sun.

Characteristics and uses:
The Combava is a small shrub which generally blossoms in the spring. Its pinkish white flowers are fragrant. The small rounded fruits that follow look like limes with a lumpy peel and texture. They have an intense aroma, reminiscent of citronella and they are rich in vitamin C. This fruit is used (especially the peel) or the leaves to flavour numerous dishes.

The Combava has to be protected from cold in winter (pot and foliage), as it does not withstand temperatures that fall below 4°C.
Except in areas where it never freezes, shelter your Combava in a conservatory, or a non-heated room during winter.

Plant them now: the shortest way to your plate is through your garden!

Looking after advice:

Watering: As Citruses do not like dryness it is important to water them regularly, but not abundantly. In summer, water every day if necessary, in winter water once or twice a week.
Fertilizer: From March to October, give it a suitable Citrus fertilizer once a month.
Pruning: Prune regularly in the spring and in summer to encourage ramification and keep it in the wished for shape.
