Description: Sea orache

Sea Orache - Atriplex halimus (latin)

Area of origin: Coastal areas of Europe.
Adult Dimensions: Height up to 1.5m, width up to 1.5m (4.9').
Foliage: Evergreen.
Soil Type: Grows in saline soils.
Hardiness: Tolerant to -12°C.
Exposure: Full light.

Properties and uses:
The Sea Orache (Atriplex halimus) is a shrub that is at once hardy, decorative, and edible.

  • Unique evergreen foliage: Its small oval leaves boast a silvery-grey, almost white hue, ideal for creating luminous contrasts with green or purple foliage.
  • "All-terrain" resistance: It fears neither salt (marine spray), nor violent winds, nor prolonged heatwaves. Once established, it requires almost no watering.
  • The ideal windbreak hedge: Thanks to its rapid growth and dense bushy habit, it provides an excellent protective screen for the more fragile plants in your garden.
  • Ecological and edible: Did you know that its leaves are edible? They have a naturally iodized and salty flavor, perfect for seasoning your salads or being fried like chips!
You can pair it with Tamarisk, for example, to create a wild seaside hedge, or use it as a standalone specimen to bring a touch of light to a Mediterranean flower bed.
