Description: Eastern Teaberry

Eastern Teaberry/Box berry - Gaultheria procumbens (latin)

Geographical origin: Forests of Northern America, Canada, China
Adult sizes: Height up to 15 cm.
Foliage: Evergreen.
Type of soil: Prefers acid, dry soil. Not tolerant of chalky soil.
Climate: Very Hardy, below -30°C,
Site: Partial shade to full shade.

Characteristics and uses:
The Eastern teaberry is a very small ground-covering shrub. It has an underground stem which is going to produce above the ground branches which are going to take over an area. In summer, small, bell-shaped, pale pink flowers appear. Then, decorative red berries follow from October to March on the female plants. The dark green foliage turns purple with the drop of temperatures.
The Eastern Teaberry can also be grown in pots, or in a flowering bed along with other peat loving plants. It is an ideal plant to grow in the shadiest sites of your garden. Finally, it can be brought indoors to decorate festive, Christmas tables in a natural and original way!
In the available bibliography, the essential oil of Eastern Teaberry and its dried leaves have numerous anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Watch out though as an overdose could be lethal! We also advise you not to let children or pets play with its berries.
