Mastic Tree, Pistacia lentiscus - Pistacia lentiscus (latin)

Area of origin : Mediterranean region, north Africa and the Canary Islands.
Adult Dimensions : Height up to 3 m (9.8'), width up to 2 m (6.6').
Foliage : Evergreen.
Soil Type : All except too wet.
Hardiness : Tolerant to - 8Â°C.
Exposure : Full sun.

Properties and uses:
The Mastic Tree (Pistacia lentiscus) is an aromatic Mediterranean shrub with many assets, both for the garden and for its derived products. Its dark green, evergreen foliage, which reddens in winter, ensures year-round decoration and constant screening. It also gives off a strong resinous smell when the leaves are crushed.
In autumn, it is adorned with pretty berries (drupes) that transition from bright red to black when ripe, offering a beautiful visual contrast. These fruits are edible, although not very flavorful, and are often consumed by birds.
The Mastic Tree exhibits high drought resistance once established. It is capable of adapting to the most difficult conditions, such as direct sea spray and poor, dry soils, and thrives equally well under scorching sun or in the shade.
It can be grown as a free-standing hedge, in a mixed border, or even in a container for sunny terraces.
The mastic is exploited for the aromatic resin extracted from its bark, called "mastic." This is notably used in cooking, confectionery, perfumery, and pharmacy. The quality of its wood is valued in cabinet-making and joinery for its pink/ochre color.
