Properties and uses:
Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is an essential countryside shrub, renowned for its hardiness, valuable ecological benefits, and great adaptability in the face of current climate challenges.

• An exceptional haven for biodiversity: Its nectar-rich flowers attract pollinators in spring. In late summer, its berries provide an essential food source for birds. Its hollow stems with soft pith also serve as shelter for beneficial insects.
• Culinary and medicinal interest: The flower umbels can be used to make syrup, lemonade, or fritters. The berries, which must be cooked, are used in jellies, jams, or syrups reputed to support the immune system in winter.
• A gardener's ally (liquid manure and mulching): Elderberry leaves can be used to make a repellent liquid plant manure against aphids, flea beetles, and rodents. They also decompose quickly to enrich compost.
• Ultra-easy cultivation: Very hardy (down to -29 °C), it adapts to almost any soil, grows very fast (up to 1 m per year), and tolerates pruning extremely well.
• Drought resistance (once established): Thanks to a deep and spreading root system, it tolerates long periods of summer drought once properly rooted (after 1 or 2 years).
• Exceptional regeneration capacity: If an intense heatwave dries out its foliage, the elderberry survives by entering a dormant state. Even if dieback occurs due to drought, it resprouts very easily from the base as soon as rains return.

Point of caution: Do not confuse black elderberry with dwarf elderberry (Sambucus ebulus), a herbaceous plant whose berries are toxic. Unlike dwarf elderberry, black elderberry is a woody shrub whose fruit clusters droop downwards when ripe.
Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) offers a overall very favorable performance against climate change. Its natural adaptability makes it an excellent choice for tomorrow's gardens, even if a few limitations arise during extreme weather events.

Points of caution and observed impacts:

• Shift in the vegetative cycle: Due to global warming, blooming occurs earlier and earlier in spring. If a late frost strikes open flowers, it can reduce the year's berry production.
• Water needs during establishment: The first year following planting remains critical. In case of a very dry spring or summer, regular watering and thick mulching at the base are essential to ensure successful establishment.
• Early foliage loss: During very hot summers, it may drop its leaves as early as August to conserve water. This defense mechanism protects the plant, but reduces its shading effect late in the season.

To maximize its resilience in hot regions, plant it preferably in partial shade or incorporate it into a diversified native hedge to provide a favorable microclimate.
