Properties and uses:
The brown bark of the adult Birch shows dark scars and deep cracks with sinuous bulges at the base of the trunk; it becomes black at the base of the old trees. The foliage turns yellow in autumn. The Birch is a hardy tree which can be planted alone, in groups or in a windbreak hedge. This River Birch is well adapted to wet acid soils.
