Everything about: Desert Rose, Pink Flowers

Desert Rose, Sabi Star - Red Flowers - Adenium obesum rubra (latin)

Geographical origins: From Senegal to Somalia, Arabian Peninsula.
Adult sizes: Height up to 3 m in its natural habitat (1m50 under our latitudes).
Foliage: Evergreen.
Type of soil: Drained, rich and moist.
Climate: Not hardy, the plant must be kept at temperatures of at least 10°C.
Site: Full sun.

Characteristics and uses:
Because it resembles a Baobab it is also called the Jackal Baobab although the more poetic amongst us prefer using its common name: Desert Rose. This indoor plant bears magnificent red flowers in summer. Of the same family than the Oleanders, it is also necessary to wash our hands after pruning it, because it has highly toxic sap.

To repot, use a mix made of 70% potting compost and 30% river sand. Allow the soil to dry out in between two copious watering and carry on watering even if the Desert Rose loses its leaves. During winter, It requires a moderate watering, indeed no water at all if temperatures fall below 15°C.
