Geographic Origin: from Japan, it also grows on the coast in south east China, and in Taïwan.
Adult size: 1 to 1.5 m. in height.
Diameter of cane: 0,1 to 0,5 cm.
Foliage: Evergreen.
Type of soil: Moist and deep. Does not like excessive chalk.
Exposure: Partial shade or sun.

Properties and uses:
This bamboo has slender closely packed canes. Its green foliage is compact and very dense. It also has a very compact shape.
It is especially suited for borders, small hedges, groups or for banks. It can also be used as ground cover.
This bamboo is easy to prune. Its name renders homage to the Japanese botanist K. Shibata. It was introduced into Europe very early on, during the latter half of the 19th century. Many people know it as the "holly leaved bamboo", and it is found under the synonym: Sasa ruscifolia.
