The canes of this bamboo are erect and become tinted with age and in the autumn. If they are exposed to the sun the canes turn a browny red. The branches are short and dark green. The leaves are set in columns around the cane. The sheaths are a pearly colour and remain attached to the canes before falling off after about 3 months.
This hardy bamboo is perfect for hedges that are used as a wind break or for creating screens of greenery. It can also be planted as a single specimen or in a planter. It needs regular watering and an occasional dose of fertilizer. The colours of its sheaths give it a very original and aesthetic appearance.
It needs a sunny position to show off its colour to advantage. It is also known as : Arundinaria fastuosa. The Japanese call it "narihiradake".
