Uchiki Squash - Curcubita maxima (latin)

Early variety, originally from Japan and with a good yield.
The small, teardrop-shaped squash is bright red orange in colour, and very decorative.
The flesh is creamy yellow to orange and has a natural sweet, chestnut flavour, so it is often called ‘Potimarron’.
It stores very well in a ventilated cellar.


Type of soil: Rich and light. Fertiliser recommended.
Sowing time: From April to June.
Harvest time: From September to October.
Site: Full sun.


Sowing technique:
- Sow 3 to 4 seeds together 2 cm deep and 1.5 m apart in all directions.
- Keep only the strongest plant of the seed hole, six weeks after growing.


Care:
- Water generously. Wait until the soil dries up at the surface to water again.
- Spread mulch to encourage the crop.
- Harvest progressively the ripen squash.
