Patty Pan Squash - Cucurbita pepo (latin)

Ancient, non-running, summer squash variety.
The unusual scalloped flying saucer shape, slightly flattened, and its milky white colour makes it a very decorative squash.
The flesh is firm and not so sweet, with a light artichoke flavour.
This squash grows well in small gardens.

Type of soil: Rich and light. Avoid excessive nitrogen amendment.
Sowing time: From April to June.
Harvest time: From August to October.
Site: Full sun.

Sowing technique:
- In April, sow 2 to 3 seeds in pods in a cold frame,
or
- In May/June, sow outdoor 2 to 3 seeds together 2 cm deep in rows 80 cm apart.
- Keep the strongest plant in each seed hole, six weeks after growth.

Care:
- Water infrequently but generously, avoid watering the leaves.
- Hoe regularly.
- Spread mulch to encourage the crop and keep away the weeds.
- Harvest when young, so the fruit keeps it mild artichoke flavour.
