Buttercup Witch Hazel, Winter Hazel - Corylopsis pauciflora (latin)

Geographical origin: Japan
Adult size: Height up to 2m, spread up to 2.50m
Foliage: Deciduous
Type of soil: Acidic to neutral, moist and humus-rich
Climate: Hardy up to -15°C
Site: Partial shade to full sun

Properties and uses:
The Buttercup Witch Hazel also called Winter Hazel is a very spreading out, thickly-built shrub. Its blossom starts as from March. Generous, 3 to 5cm long, slightly fragrant grapes, green to start with then turning butter-yellow hang from the still bare branches.
The flowers are then followed by oval, embossed leaves, green to start with turning golden in the autumn.
The Buttercup Witch Hazel is well liked for its lack of maintenance as all it requires is to be planted in a shady spot and mulching of its base in order to retain moisture.
It can be grown on its own, in flowering beds, in pots or in hedges grown with other varieties of Hazelnut trees (Common Hazel, purple-leaved filbert, or witch Hazel) for example.
