Area of origins : Europe, Asia. Adult dimensions : 15 cm. Foliage : Deciduous. Type of soil : All soils with a preference for light, moist earth. Hardiness : Hardy. Exposure : Full sun. Characteristics and uses : As soon as the cold has gone in January or February, the crocus open their corolla, if the cold returns they close their petals but open them again at the first sign of sun. Plant the bulbs between September and December in tight groups, spaced about 10 cm apart and bedded in with a handful of sand. This will help them to establish their roots and lead to earlier flowering. After flowering, wait until the foliage has completely withered before cutting it off. The crocus is at home in lawns, rockeries or pots. www.planfor.co.uk
