Japanese Apricot - Prunus mume, armeniaca mume (latin)

Areas of origin: China, Japan.
Full grown dimensions: Height up to 10 metres (32,8'), width up to 8 metres (26,2').
Foliage: Deciduous.
Soil type: Dislikes lime. Avoid very .
Hardiness: Hardy tolerant to -23°C.
Exposure: Full sun.


Properties and uses:
The heavily perfumed white to dark pink flowers appear on branches before the foliage in March – April. Very decorative, this shrub is beautiful planted alone or within a group of plants, Bonsai enthusiasts particularly like this very decorative little tree.

Several varieties exist:
- The Japanese apricot 'Beni-Chidori' has single, deep pink blossoms.
- The Japanese apricot 'Bicolor' has single blossoms that tend to be double, light pink and white.
